With the 1881 census as a reference we should get an indiction of our ancestors mobility and dispersal by looking back 10 years to the 1871 census. The 1871 census index (Ancestry.co.uk) however contains a number of mis-transcriptions that could be misleading without looking at the original enumerators books (assuming the enumerator heard and entered the correct spelling in the first place!).
